Freight Railroad General Manager

 Direct all operations and business functions for a freight railroad operating year-round Report directly to the CEO

 Job Requirements:

  • In charge of all facets of a federally regulated short line railroad
  • Ensure compliance with applicable safety and operating rules as it relates to track, equipment, and train operations
  • Manage direct reports responsible for trucking, maintenance, and yard operations
  • Manage train service, switching, and coordination with the connecting carrier (Union Pacific Railroad) and local switching crew
  • Coordinate and maintain compliance and schedule of third-party vendors site material
  • Manage staff, including hiring, training, coaching, performance management; develop supervisory goals and objectives; and effective resolution of safety issues and claims
  • Drive functional plans within the operations group to execute against the business plan to achieve or exceed the Business Unit’s budget and strategic plan to grow the business and meet or exceed service business objectives
  • Lead all matters related to operations to ensure overall operations meet safety, compliance and P & L objectives
  • Ensure maximum productivity and logistics management systems for the transload yard and establish productivity goals where needed; ensure adherence to operating standards; and manage labor hours and disposal expenses
  • Interact with local, state and federal government employees to resolve concerns; ensure regulatory compliance standards are met
  • Verify the railroad’s safety program through employee training and safety meetings Ensure FRA regulation compliance Oversee effective safety and accident prevention programs to ensure all reasonable action are taken to prevent accidents and injuries; ensure a safe and productive work environment for all employees; implement and maintain and effective loss control and safety program
  • Lead operations to ensure compliance with all standards including environmental, operating, regulatory, safety, accounting and ethics
  • Approve expenses and manage budget for the operations department including approval of purchase orders and vendor pricing
  • Develop a best-in-class team and workplace culture and effectively manage performance and talent development; drive best-practice sharing
  • Build and maintain strong and effective relations with relevant government, community and environmental groups
  • Ensures plans and procedures are being established and followed to ensure the safety of customers, the public, and our employees
  • Increase revenue through strategic planning
  • Evaluate and re-negotiate all vendor services contracts
  • Improve employee retention through implementation of departmental training, employee recognition and incentive programs
  • Analyze and realign hiring, terminating and orientation processes
  • Analyze monthly P&L with detailed critique
  • Forecast daily, weekly and monthly to accomplish budgeted revenues
  • Direct and coordinate the food & beverage operations
  • Implement a guest satisfaction program
  • Establish and maintain applicable preventative maintenance programs to protect the physical assets of the property
  • Maintain a security function to protect the assets of the property and the personal safety of employees and guests
  • Implement/maintain two-way communication systems that cross departmental lines to reach all employees
  • Develop and/or implement new programs which result in an increased level of guest satisfaction and operational excellence
  • Manage in compliance with established company policies and procedures; and local, state and federal laws and regulations

Job Skills/Education/Experience:

  • Higher education or university program certificate or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum 5 years’ supervisory experience in railroad management or the combination of supervisory experience and training in a course in track maintenance.
  • Must have a valid driver license
  • Computer skills to include all Microsoft products, and become proficient with proprietary reservation, Point of Sale, and other IT systems
  • Ability to exercise excellent communication, presentation, organization, time management and listening skills
  • Ability to use analytical skills for measuring business performance and potential
  • Ability to successfully interact with all levels of customers and property management
  • Must be able to work weekends and some holidays

Job Qualifications:

  • Train crew certification or experience preferred
  • Experience in railroad operations required, preferably as a railroad trainmaster or other operating officer
  • Understanding of FRA and other railroad safety, track, and equipment rules & regulations
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple sites
  • Experience in labor relations
  • Demonstrated business acumen, strategic thinking and an ability to execute against formulated strategy
  • Demonstrated ability to lead change initiatives
  • Able to direct large staff
  • Is process-oriented and results-oriented in setting and pursuing aggressive goals, demonstrating a strong commitment to organizational success and marshaling resources to accomplish goals and objectives
